PerfCopilot vs 15Five: Performance Review Writing Compared

TL;DR. They are not the same kind of tool. 15Five is a continuous performance platform built around weekly check-ins, OKRs, and "Best-Self" review cycles — reflection-first. PerfCopilot is the writing layer — it pulls the period's real work from GitHub, Jira, Slack and produces a cited, bias-checked review draft. The fastest setup is both: keep 15Five for the cadence, use PerfCopilot to write the reviews that go into it.

What each one actually is

15Five

A continuous performance management platform. The product breaks into four modules:

The defining feature — and where the name comes from — is weekly check-ins: a short reflection ("15 minutes to write, 5 to read") that employees complete each week, surfacing wins, blockers, and sentiment to managers as a continuous stream rather than a quarterly event.

PerfCopilot

A focused writing assistant. One job: turn a review period's actual shipped work into a first-draft review the manager edits and delivers.

It does not run check-ins, store OKRs, survey engagement, or coach managers.

Side-by-side comparison

Job-to-be-done

| | PerfCopilot | 15Five | |---|---|---| | Run weekly check-ins / surface blockers | — | ✅ | | Track OKRs continuously | — | ✅ | | Run engagement surveys | — | ✅ | | Run manager 1:1s | — | ✅ | | Write the manager's review draft from work signal | ✅ | — | | Cite each claim back to a specific PR/ticket/thread | ✅ | — | | Automated bias screen before submit | ✅ | — | | Coaching / leadership development programs | — | ✅ |

Evidence source

15Five's review module ("Best-Self Review") is reflection-first: employees synthesize their year from their own check-ins and self-assessment; managers respond. The data is what the employee surfaced over time, plus what the manager remembers. PerfCopilot reverses that: it pulls the entire period's signal from the work systems first (PRs merged, tickets closed, threads led, incidents handled), then composes a draft against that evidence. The same review should be written either way; in practice PerfCopilot raises the floor of the evidence available to the manager.

Integrations

15Five's integrations are HR/identity-shaped: HRIS sync (Workday, BambooHR), SSO (Okta), Slack notifications, calendar. They make the platform work in your stack.

PerfCopilot's integrations are work-shaped (where engineers ship: code, tickets, threads, calls). They make the evidence show up. A 15Five integration is on the PerfCopilot roadmap — once live, PerfCopilot will pull check-in answers and OKR progress as signals alongside the other 17 sources.

Bias handling

15Five provides written guidance and prompts in the review editor. PerfCopilot screens the actual draft text against three specific bias patterns — gendered language, tenure effects, recency-weighting of evidence — and surfaces flags before the manager submits. This is a different, narrower thing: a check, not a workflow.

Pricing

These are not substitutes — that's the separate cost of the writing layer if you only buy that.

Where they overlap (and where they complement)

| Capability | 15Five handles | PerfCopilot handles | |---|---|---| | Weekly check-ins and self-reflection | ✅ | — | | Continuous OKR tracking | ✅ | — | | Collecting peer / 360 feedback | ✅ | — | | Defining the review cycle and questions | ✅ | — | | Producing the first-draft text of the manager review | Manual text box + check-in roll-up | ✅ Cited, bias-checked draft | | Engagement surveys | ✅ | — | | Manager coaching / development programs | ✅ | — |

The honest read: for an organization already running 15Five, PerfCopilot adds the part 15Five doesn't do well — getting from a year's worth of self-reflections to a credible, evidence-backed manager review. 15Five gives the manager the employee's view; PerfCopilot gives them the artifact view. Together: a draft that cites both.

When 15Five alone is enough

When you'd add PerfCopilot

How they work together

  1. 15Five runs the year: weekly check-ins, OKR tracking, mid-year and end-of-year cycles.
  2. When the review cycle opens, the manager opens PerfCopilot, picks the cycle and the employee.
  3. PerfCopilot pulls the period's signals — PRs, tickets, channel threads, and (once the 15Five integration is live) the employee's check-in answers and OKR progress.
  4. It generates a cited draft in your team's tone (trained on prior reviews).
  5. The manager edits, the bias check runs, and PerfCopilot delivers the final review as a sealed magic-link PDF — or pastes into 15Five's Best-Self template.

Translation: 15Five stays the continuous-cadence system of record. PerfCopilot writes the review at the annual moment.

Frequently asked questions

Does PerfCopilot replace 15Five? No. They're different categories. 15Five runs the continuous loop (check-ins, OKRs, engagement, reviews); PerfCopilot writes the manager's review draft. Most teams keep both.

Can I use PerfCopilot without 15Five? Yes. PerfCopilot works standalone — drafts deliver as a sealed magic-link PDF (with an HR copy). A 15Five integration is on the roadmap; today, PerfCopilot doesn't depend on it.

How does PerfCopilot use 15Five data if I run both? 15Five collects weekly self-reflection (check-ins) and OKR progress over time — both are valid signal inputs for a review draft. The other 17 PerfCopilot integrations add the artifact side (PRs, tickets, channel threads). The draft cites both.

Is the evidence shared cross-tenant? No. Signals pulled from your tools go to your PerfCopilot organization only, never shared with other customers. Drafts are generated by Anthropic Claude and not used for training. OAuth tokens are encrypted at rest.

How does pricing compare for a 25-person team? PerfCopilot Pro ≈ $1,500/year ($4.99 × 25 × 12). 15Five's modular pricing varies by which products you take; quote from 15five.com/pricing on the day. They're additive, not alternatives.

Which one should I pick first? If you have no continuous-performance cadence yet and a small engineering team: try PerfCopilot Pro (or free up to 5) — it solves the most painful manual step. If your bigger problem is the lack of weekly visibility into how the team's doing: start with 15Five (the check-in habit is hard to roll without their template). Add PerfCopilot when the review-writing day becomes the bottleneck.

Verdict

PerfCopilot is not "a 15Five alternative" — that framing concedes a fight that doesn't exist. PerfCopilot is the writing layer for whatever review cycle you already run, including 15Five's Best-Self Review. The right question isn't which one; it's do I want my managers writing reviews from a year of self-reflections alone, or from self-reflections plus a cited artifact trail.
